Christmas Cheer for a Family in Need

Hey everyone. Hope your holiday is going great! Just dropping a quick note to let everyone know that there's a family in need for Christmas. I have only gotten very minute details, and will fill you in as soon as I can. I think it would be great if our neighborhood could pull a little something together. Please comment, call, or e-mail if you are willing to help. It would be very much appreciated! I am thinking until I get some details, go through what you have. If you have anything you want to get rid of, hang on to it for a bit and we'll see what we can do to help. I will find out if we need to coordinate some food too. I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and I'll update as soon as I can....
Thanks, Megan megative_11@yahoo.com (801)433-7800

Megan...

Thanks for all of your kindness concerning Megan. I've had a lot of calls wondering how people can help. Meals have been set up for Mon.-Sat. this week. If you weren't asked to do a meal then you can always call and set up a meal after this week. I'm sure it would be very welcome. Her recovery will be 4-6 weeks. I'm sure she'll need some help with her boys sometime next week (her mom is helping this week) and maybe some light housework next week. Her house has been cleaned for this week. Thanks again for all of your help. We have the best neighborhood!

Megan Stewart is in the hospital

I just got a call from Megan's husband Wes and he informed me that Megan is in the hospital. She was having severe side pain last night and they went to the hospital. Come to find out, she had a large tumor along her ovary. The tumor was non cancerous. Thank goodness! She had surgery this morning and is doing well. She will be at the American Fork hospital today only so if anyone wants to visit her she is in the womens/childrens center room 243. Wes said she would welcome any visitors. He anticipates they will go home sometime tonight. I wish I knew more details! Please keep her in your prayers. The doctors expect a 4-6 recovery time period with minimal lifting. So, if anyone can help her babysit, clean etc. then I'm sure she would be grateful. Megan is one of those people that give and sacrifice to anyone in need. She is a real sweetheart and very compassionate towards others. Let's pull together and help her out. :)

Now's the Time to Commit

Hey ladies! Just a little reminder that the sign-ups for the Moab 1/2 Marathon/10K started on the 18th. We need to get a group together and register. The race is on March 21, 2009. We can sign up in groups of 6 applicants. The registration fee is $60. That includes the post-race fun and a t-shirt. If our team doesn't make the lottery, the registration fee will be refunded.
This is going to be so much fun! I don't know about any of you, but I've been so busy with the holidays that running has not been high on the priority list. But I am going to start running at the Legacy center a few times a week. Also, the standard time for training for a half marathon is about 11 or 12 weeks. In other words, you can sign up and not worry about training until next year. What a great New Year's resolution! The hotels book up really fast, so we probably want to make reservations the day we know we're in the race for sure. Moab was in the 80s last time I ran this, so it would be great outside weather for fun! Please come join in the fun. It's going to be awesome! Leave a comment here, e-mail me at megative_11@yahoo.com or give me a call at (801)859-1140 if you want to register. Hope to hear from you soon!

A Thought for Christmas.....Please Leave Your Input!

I was just thinking about Christmas. Early I know, but I am an early girl. Anyway, a thought came into my head this morning as I have been trying to figure out neighbor gifts (stressful!) when I remembered a conversation my best friend, Celest, and I had last year. Her neighborhood decided to omit neighborhood gifts and instead donate to Primary Children's Hospital. Their neighborhood just donated the money they would've spent on gifts and pooled all their money together under an account set up for their neighborhood. They raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000. How cool is that? I just thought I'd throw this thought out there and see what everyone thought. I will be happy to pass out flier or do whatever I need to do to pursue it further. I just thought I'd make sure people were interested first. Save yourself some time, calories, and let's all join together and work to achieve something amazing! Leave your thoughts/ideas on the comment board here, or e-mail me at megative_11@yahoo.com Thanks! Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving

Hello Fellow Neighbors and Friends,

I'll get to the point...my husband just informed me that he has to work the day before Thanksgiving and the day after. We don't have any family close by and always go to Boise to be with family for Thanksgiving. This year is different. We will be here for the holiday. I'm ok with that though because this is what I'm proposing. What I want to do is have a "stray" (I know, great term) Thanksgiving for all of you who, for different circumstances, don't have a place to go for Thanksgiving. Or, if you just want a change then you can still come! All are invited. I want to do the traditional food, football game in the morning, and maybe hit a movie afterwards (that is our tradition). I am open to suggestions or if you want to be on board, then let me know. We can do it at my house or anywhere else. I'm not picky. I just want to be around people on this day. Think it over and get back with me in the next week or 2 or leave a comment. By the way, this is Michelle Hall. :) 814-0017 :) Thanks for reading. All are invited. :)

We have an Olympic Skeleton Racer Racing Local!

Hey everyone!
Sorry its last minute but I know some of you wanted to know when I (Noelle Pace) would race here... So,I am competing in the U.S. National Selection races this weekend for Skeleton! (These races determine who will be on the World Cup team for the season). Whoever would like to come is more than welcome! Here are the details:
There are two separate races.
Cost: It's free!
When: Race #1 is Friday (tomorrow) at 5 PM (usually until 6:30 or 7 PM).
Race # 2 is Saturday at 5 PM.
Where: The Utah Olympic Park in Park City (Kimball Junction exit). Once you turn into the Olympic Park, turn left at the stop sign and drive all the way up the hill. Go past the buildings on your left (the visitor center and museum). There will be a gate. If it is up, just drive through, otherwise, the code to get in is 5690# . Continue to drive up the hill and you can either park on the side of the road by the first parking lot on the left (other cars should be there) by the finish dock, or you can try and drive all the way to the top of the hill and park on the side of the road to see us start our competition. The start, curve 6, and curve 12 are the best places to watch.
Wear: It has been pretty cold up here for the past few days. Bring your winter coats, gloves and hats! (and maybe some hot chocolate and snacks!)
If you have any questions, Delana Smith has been up here and is coming this weekend...so you can call her . 801-885-8178
See you soon!

Denise Ivory's ASL Class

Denise Ivory is teaching ASL classes on Tuesday nights at her house at 7:20PM. Everyone is welcome (including husbands and kids). Come and join in the fun and learn something new, as well as get to know your neighbors better. Hope to see you there!

Lock Your Cars or Park in the Garage

I heard through the grapevine today that we've been having some break-ins in our neighborhood parked cars. That's all I know. So just a little reminder to protect your valuables by locking your cars and/or pulling them in your garage.

Nativity Sets

I am going to be making a nativity set this year. Wes's aunt made pattens for some simple, inexpensive nativity costumes. She says it cost around $18 to make. I am guessing it might be a little more than that since they did bulk orders on fabric, but we'll see. (There is the cheap section at Wal-Mart.) If anyone is interested in making these, e-mail me at megative_11@yahoo.com or put a comment here and I will get you the info. It might even be fun to have a girls night sometime next month to get together and make them. Let me know what you think!

Just a Thought

For those of you thinking about running the half marathon, or another race in which you would receive a medal, I just read about an amazing program started by a physician called Medals4Mettle. M4M is a program where you can donate your hard-earned racing medals to people running a different kind of marathon, such as cancer treatments or other long, draining, scary medical problems. A large portion are donated to children's hospitals. These medals are treasured by their recipients, representing a hard-won battle, and supporting them on their own battle to survive. You can fill out a "legacy card" to send in with your medal, or you can just send it in. I think this program sounds amazing, one that has touched my heart and inspired me more than ever to run the race, along with many more to come to donate to this worthy cause. this would be a fun addition to something that could only benefit everyone involved in so many ways. Just something to think about. For more info, go to www.medals4mettle.org

For those of the LDS faith:

For those of the LDS faith:

Sisters,
We as a Relief Society Presidency would like to remind each of you of the Bishop's challenge from the beginning of 2008 to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year. As a presidency we'd like to challenge the sisters to take these last three months to meet this challenge. President Marion G. Romney stated, “I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness” To meet this challenge you only need to read six pages a day. This may be a lofty goal for some, if it is too overwhelming for you, we just ask that you do better than you are doing right now. If that means reading one page a day, we know that the blessings promised will be poured out upon you. We feel this will be a wonderful opportunity for our ward to grow in spirituality and unity. On top of this challenge we are going to be having a two minute Book of Mormon time during opening exercises of Relief Society where someone will be asked (in advance) to share something they have learned, or a way the Book of Mormon has blessed them. We are excited for this chance to fill the homes in our ward and the lives of our families with the beautiful blessings the Lord has promised us through President Romney. We love you sisters and pray for you daily. Let us set this goal together and bring "peace, joy, and happiness" to our lives and the lives of those around us.
Much love,
Wendy Bascom, Stacey James, Melissa George, and Pat Palmer

Update on Running

Okay girls, I've gotten some feedback on running and I'm sooo excited for all of us to get started! Michelle had the awesome idea of posting schedules of when different people are running, so you can jump into any run that works for your schedule. So here's the latest:

Stacey, Andria, MacKenzie - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights (9:00ishPM) and Saturday mornings (7AM MacKenzie, and I'm unsure about Stacey and Andria. Stacey and Andria are doing the couch to 5K program, which would be a great start to get a good base. It's either 6 or 8 weeks, I've seen it both ways, and it alternates between running and walking, increasing the running as the time goes by until you are running the whole way. I think it's a great way to get back into the groove, without going too fast. It should be lots of fun. Everyone runs at their own pace, and the people who run faster turn around and walk back to the group during the walking time. Jump on in whenever!

Kristina - She is a morning gal. She's shooting for Monday and Wednesday mornings, 6 or 6:30AM. She is fine with going it alone for while to get used to it, but I am sure she's welcome company too.

Kristi - she also would like to go nights. I'm not sure about Saturdays, it never really came up.

Megan and Michelle - we are flexible. I think Michelle prefers mornings, and I don't really care. I just want to make sure I'm going at least 4 times a week. Wednesday and some Thursdays nights don't work for me, otherwise I'm flexible. My boys will be coming with me if it's before Wes gets home at 7:30PM or after he leaves at 8:30AM. Post a comment, email me at megative_11@yahoo.com or just show up to whichever group is convenient. See you there!

Almost everyone seems on board with the half marathon, some people want to try for a couple weeks first. Registration is in October, so think about it for a bit and I will let you know when it's time to decide. Everyone is in for running a 5K, so let's pick one and do it! Let me know if you have any ideas for one we could run, and I will do some research too. I am so excited for this, it's going to be way fun!

Highlands Has a New Marathoner

Michelle Hall ran the Top of Utah Marathon on September 20th. Her time was 4:28:44 What an amazing accomplishment! For more info and pictures of her race, visit her blog at http://www.tomandmichelle.blogspot.com/ Way to go, Michelle! Congratulations!

Upcoming Events

Here are a few upcoming events in our neighborhood. If there are any events we are missing, please e-mail the event to Megan Stewart at megative_11@yahoo.com

Canyonlands 1/2 Marathon in Moab spring 2009
We are trying to get a group together to run the Moab 1/2 marathon in March 2009. This will be really fun to do as a neighborhood! Call or e-mail Megan Stewart for more info. Also, if you would just like to run with the group, but not run the race, please join in! We'd love to have you! We are currently working to get some schedules together so no one will have to run alone. Let us know what works for you! See you there!

Volleyball
There is currently a game for Highlands East team at 9:00PM at the Stake Center Thursday, October 2, and the same day for Highlands West at Eagle's Gate at 8:00PM. We are currently practicing Wednesday nights at 9:00PM. We will meet at the stake center, and if it's really crowded, we might jet over to our building and practice there. It will be a great time to develop skills and get to know one another. Please join in the fun!

Clothing/Toy Swap
This will be in the front of Michelle Hall's house (3532 Heyward) on October 1st at 10AM. We will hopefully be doing this once a month. Bring all unwanted toys/clothing and meet at Michelle's. Take what you want and leave what you don't. Leftover items will be donated. Please come even if you don't have anything to share. You might find a treasure.

Knitting
The knitting class had to be cancelled last minute, but will be rescheduled. We will either do it in a group or individually, based on our needs. Fall is a great time to learn to knit, just in time for Christmas and cool weather! Pat Palmer contacted me and said she would like to donate a lot of wool yarn to whomever would like to help knit some beanies for humanitarian aid. We will learn the basics first, and beanies next. Beanies are a really fun project, and make a great gift for the ski bum in the family. Plus, helping someone else while learning something new is definitely a bonus! Leave a comment here, or contact Megan Stewart (801)859-1140 for more info. This is a really fun and rewarding project. Hope to see you there.

ASL
Denise Ivory will be teaching a fun, interactive ASL class on a Tuesday evening at 7PM coming up. We don't have a final date quite yet, but we will keep you posted. Denise is an excellent teacher and this class will be a blast!

Relief Society General Broadcast
This will be at the stake center on Saturday, September 27th at 6PM. Refreshments will be served.

Dinner Group
If you are interested in participating in a dinner group with other couples in the ward, please call or e-mail Megan Stewart. We are looking for couples to host or just attend. Signups will be monthly. The host gets to choose the theme, meal, date, and time, maybe even an activity. Everyone can help bring something assigned by the host. This is a really fun way to get to know your neighbors.

Babysitting Swap
If you are interested in participating in a babyitting swap, please let Megan Stewart know, or leave a comment here. It will be fun and free babysitting, and with an adult you trust. How much better can it get than that?

These are all the upcoming events, groups, or activities we could think of. If there is anything left out, please let us know. We are also willing to do ads, or highlight special avcomplishments of the people in our neighborhood. Also, we want to introduce some of the new families in our neighborhood. If you know any of them and would like to highlight them, or help us do so, please e-mail megative_11@yahoo.com with more info. We want to get lots of feedback on what you want to see. So send us an e-mail or comment telling us what you like and what you want to see. Hope to hear from you soon!
